The gold standard, and a staff favorite. Hosts Mindy Thomas and Guy Raz take the week’s most amazing science and turn it into a giddy, high-energy romp full of sound effects, silliness, and real discovery. It’s genuinely funny, sneakily educational, and the show most likely to have your kid shouting “did you KNOW” across the dinner table. If you’re only going to try one science podcast, make it this one.
But Why: A Podcast for Curious Kids
Ages 5–12 · Big questions
A show led entirely by kids’ curiosity. They send in the questions, and the team goes and finds real answers about nature, words, feelings, even the end of the world. It’s gentle, wide-ranging, and never talks down to anyone, which makes it a perfect first “why” podcast for younger listeners.
Brains On!
Ages 8–12 · Science Q&A
Each week a different kid co-host joins host Molly Bloom to chase down a listener’s question, like whether dogs know they’re dogs, or why feet stink. The answers are rigorous but never dry, and the rotating kid hosts make it feel like science by kids, for kids. A brilliant step up for the older curious crowd.

Smologies with Alie Ward

The kid-friendly cut of the hit adult podcast Ologies: all the fascinating science, none of the swearing. Host Alie Ward interviews real experts on everything from toads to the moon, and the short, clean episodes are ideal for older kids who’ve outgrown the basics and want to go deep on one subject at a time.

From Radiolab’s Lulu Miller comes a wonder-soaked show about the genuine strangeness of life right here on Earth, full of creatures and phenomena that defy everything you thought you knew about nature. It’s gorgeously produced, complete with songs, and every bit as likely to delight the grown-up in the room.
